Many people are living as society sees how they should, especially on ideas against social norms towards gender. From the moment they were born, people have excepted the “passive definition of gender”, and kept playing their own “roles”. Most of the time, their many behaviors are not sourced from their own intuition, but bounded by what should one do base on their gender. Under the society’s definition of gender, people are compelled to accept their gender role, this phenomenon isn’t in reality people trying to find their place in life, but a passive form of accepting what meanings they should perform under the society’s influence. The final project has combined the concept of games, by utilizing imageries of different games, to express the concept of being controlled by the society.
There is a phenomenon in China which my mother is the victim of: not long after she was born, she was outcasted because she was a girl. Under the influence of patriarchy, many women were like my mother, they get unwanted roles in games as children. The destiny that choses you have altered your live path, and burdens you with gender-specific definitions.
Before we develop independent self-awareness, we rely on our parents to understand ourselves, and been forced to accept things and concepts which have strong gender definition – for example, girls have to accept a playhouse with dolls, and boys have to accept competitive battle games with all sorts of challenges. Everyone has nothing else to choose from, and loses the freedom to independent thinking.
People always say: the weapon of a woman is makeups and tears.
Why shouldn’t women allowed to pick up real weapons to fight against it?
Men bears the shame of talking about their own vulnerabilities, yet no one truly understands the times they have breakdowns. This role doesn’t have a vulnerable option.
To men, their work embodies social definition. When you glance the office space, you’ll find that the cubicles are like the game “packman”, men who move between them are just like packman, always working in the office, because he’s been “assigned” this important task.
House work are like a natural job entitlement for women, cleaning every inch of the floor, is just like playing “candy crush”, there are no means to an end.
